Protest
In 1963, 250,000 people gathering was enough to make an impact via protest. Today, millions protest in favor of human rights, and governments do nothing. It is not enough to show face anymore.
In the age of late-stage capitalism, the only force that creates political influence are financial ones. Boycotts, divestments, and private citizen sanctions are our best tools to create pressure on those stronger than us. By embodying our values, we stand to change our communities and, eventually, the world at large.
In addition to being mindful about financial investments, it is helpful to build a community of like minded individuals when you are working against forces greater than yourself. Here are some ways to build those communities:
Read the work of activists to better understand the movement
Initiate intimate (kind, respectful) conversations with people who have opposing views
Local volunteering
βThe opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference.β - Elie Wiesel
