Melatonin

This natural substance is produced in the body during the sleep cycle. You can use it to replicate the body's rhythms with a small dose time-release tablet taken at the same time every night, or it can be used to “knock yourself out” with strong doses.

  • Traditional tablets - Traditional melatonin supplements contain a large dose, which can further disrupt the natural melatonin cycle. The most common side effect is next-day drowsiness. These tablets can also be mixed with other herbal supplements, which might worsen those effects.

  • Time-release tablets - For a low-dose option, these pills break down slowly, avoiding a sudden surge of melatonin in the body. This mirrors more natural cycles and can help regulate disrupted melatonin cycles. The most common side effect is not feeling any effects.

  • Liposomal/sublingual liquid - Liposomes deliver drugs directly to affected tissue, bypassing the liver and offering quick relief. If overused, reliance on this product can disrupt the natural melatonin cycle. Because it metabolizes quickly, there is less chance of next-day drowsiness.
