Orienting

Orienting is a therapeutic practice that offers the nervous system more information about the environment, which creates more self-awareness and cultivates a sense of safety.

It might seem overly simplistic, but try it and see how you feel. Here are some simple steps:

  1. Find a Quiet Space: Start in a quiet space where you feel safe and comfortable.

  2. Engage Your Senses: Focus on one sense at a time. For example, close your eyes and listen to the sounds around you. Notice the different layers of sound, their direction, and distance.

  3. Describe Your Surroundings: Open your eyes and slowly look around. Describe your surroundings in detail, either silently or out loud. Notice colors, shapes, and textures.

  4. Feel the Ground: Pay attention to the sensation of your feet on the ground or the chair supporting your body. This tactile input can enhance your sense of stability.
